How You Can Find High-Quality Backlinks

Written by Devin Sizemore

One of the most important things you can do if you have your own website is to use high-quality backlinks. If a high-quality website links to another high-quality website, it essentially tells search crawlers to increase the rating of both websites. This can bring in more traffic, more customers, and essentially more income for you.

So, where can you get high-quality backlinks? Well, there are plenty of ways you can do so. Below, we’ve included multiple types of strategies, we talk about some easy link building tactics, as well as why you should even use backlinks. We hope that this article can help answer any questions you may have and teach you something new that’ll benefit your business.

Why Use Backlinks?

If you’ve run a website for any amount of time, you know how important links can be. Not only do they lower bounce rates when you add things like internal links, but they actually affect how a search engine will rank your website. You may be asking why a search engine’s rank matters.

Where you rank on search results determines how much traffic your website brings in. The more traffic you bring in, the more likely they are to turn into paying customers, and the more money you can make. If you rank low on a search result, fewer people will be visiting your website.

By using backlinks, you’re essentially allowing another website to link their audience to your website, bringing in more traffic. When another high-quality website does this, they’re taking people away from their website and leading them to yours, so they’ll need something in return. Be willing to honestly ask yourself what you, your business, and your website have to offer.

The more high-quality websites that have backlinks to your website, the more trustworthy your site will be to search engines. We are still waiting for the day when Google and other well-known search engines release information on how they measure credibility, but for now, we’ve got you covered.

Easy Link Building Tactics

Link building isn’t the easiest thing to do, so we’ve decided to include a handful of link building tactics that are fairly simple to do. There are several ways you can get links, but not all of them will work for your website. Consider what resources you have at your disposal and what resources are within your industry.

If you’re in a more niche market, it may be a bit harder to build the links. If you’re in a well-established business, it can be quite easy. The link building tactics below can be applied to nearly every type of website in the business.

Link Building Based Off Content

When your link building based on the content you already have, you’re creating an asset that you can use to get more links. There are several different types of content this can be applied to; check out our list below:

  • A series of photos
  • A tutorial video
  • A how-to article
  • An infographic
  • A live demonstration

You can use any or all of these content types to create an asset that can be used to get you links. Based on your brand, this content can be informational, entertaining, or just straightforward. Eventually, you can use this content to reach out to people that you’d like to backlink your site. As your website ranks higher and higher, the less you’ll have to ask people to backlink your site, because they’ll likely do it on their own because of the site’s high authority status. It’s important that you stay patient, as this typically doesn’t happen overnight. It takes quite a bit of work but will pay off in the long run.

Using Ego Bait

Once you have a piece of content, you can use ego baiting. This is essentially when you use your content to play on other people’s egos. When you do this, you’re hoping that the people viewing the content can relate to it or affects their ego and then they’ll share the content with their audience. It’s important to mention that when you use this tactic, do so in a positive light. Using ego baiting negatively is a great way to sink your business to the ground.

You should only use ego baiting if you’re trying to get people’s attention. It can be one of the easier ways to get high-quality links and traffic to your site. This doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll get a huge amount of new visitors online, but the visitors you do get will likely be your target audience.

Guest Blogging

We’ll dive into this topic a little deeper later on, but we did want to touch on guest blogging when it comes to link building tactics. With the popularity of the Internet, guest blogging has become more and more common of a tactic used when it comes to backlinking.

If you can produce high-quality content, you’ll likely be allowed to guest post on high-quality sites. This is a great way to get your website out there and reach a new audience. Guest blogging is one of the easier tactics, but it shouldn’t be the only one you use.

Building Broken Links

There are a ton of broken links all over the Internet. Strangely enough, many broken links are found on reputable websites. If your website has a broken link, visitors will not be able to use it to guide them to wherever you’re wanting them to go. This is why building broken links is a commonly used practice.

This tactic is relatively simple. You need to research broken links and then find quality targets. Once you do this you can create content from the list you read about above, and then reach out to your audience.

Reclaiming Links

The last tactic we want to mention is re-claiming links. While this sounds like it could be the same as building broken links, it’s a bit different. You’ve likely encountered a link that needed to be reclaimed if you’ve ever click the link and were led to a page that says “404 website not found”.

These are links to websites that no longer exist, hence why it can’t be found. If you have a link that does this on your website, you can simply redirect your audience using a new link or fix the link that’s already existing.

Something else you’ll find when it comes to reclaiming links is people writing about your website without actually linking to it. You can reclaim the link by reaching out to the author or website. If you’re unsure if sites are mentioning you without linking your website, you can use tools like Google Alerts or Mention to help find where this may be happening to you.

What Makes A Backlink High QualityWhat Makes A Backlink High Quality

What if you already have plenty of backlinks relating to your website? How do you know if each one of them is of high quality? Below, you’ll find seven things that apply to high-quality backlinks. If you found that backlinks for your website don’t seem to be bringing in traffic, double-check that the seven topics below can be applied to your website.

1. Domain Authority

Whenever you hear domain authority, that is referring to a ranking metric that is used to determine whether or not a website is of high authority. The ranking system uses things such as the domain age, the size of the website, and more. You’ll receive a domain authority score that will be a number out of 100. For example, if you have high domain authority, you might have a score of 91 out of 100. If you have lower domain authority, you might get a score of 30 out of 100.

2. Page Ranking

Page rank is something else you need to consider. A page ranking is where your website shows up during a search enquiry. Let’s say you have a website all about gardening. If someone searches for “how to start a garden”, you’ll want your website to rank higher, to increase the chance of searchers clicking on it. On the other hand, if your website or page ranks low, you likely won’t be getting many visitors.

3. Content

Another thing that determines whether or not a backlink is of high quality is the content it is linking to. You want to make sure the content is relevant to the link to increase the chance of a reader clicking on it. This is one of the simplest things you can do to improve your backlinks.

4. Age Of The Domain

You’ve read that in order to have a high authority domain, the ranking metric is going to consider the age of your domain. Well, this isn’t a major factor, but it still matters. Essentially, search engines trust websites that have been around longer. Some professionals say that this is not the case and that the age of your domain is nothing to worry about. So again, it may not be of the utmost importance, but is still something to consider.

5. Using Keywords

The keywords to use as anchor text on your links matters as well. Keywords, in general, are incredibly important, but the ability to use them as links is basically getting two things done at once.

One thing to note on this is that anchor text and keywords should be within the writing naturally; it shouldn’t sound forced or out of context. If you have someone writing your content for you, stress this point to them.

6. Traffic From Link

Another thing that makes a backlink high-quality is one that sends a lot of traffic. The last thing you want is a backlink that no one clicks on. If you’re gaining a lot of traffic from a specific backlink, chances are it is of high-quality. Having a lot of traffic directed towards your website will increase your overall visibility to Google and other search engines alike.

7. Editorial Links

Lastly, one of the most valuable types of links are editorial links. These are links that appear in the text itself. You also want to make sure these are relevant to the content and placed correctly. By using editorial links that are strategically placed, you’re essentially telling the reader to click on a relevant phrase to learn more. This is a great way to keep traffic on your site and decrease the bounce rate.

How You Can Get Backlinks And Where To Find Them

backlinks

By now you read quite a bit about backlinks in general. We wanted to give you several ways you can get backlinks and share with you where you can find them.

You may be surprised by some of the suggestions below, but you don’t know if something works until you try it. The worst that can happen is you realize that method doesn’t work for you and your website. Then you can try another way.

Create Evergreen Content

One of the first things you want to do is make sure that all your links in the pages they’re linking to are evergreen. This means that they don’t contain dates, so the content is always relevant. If your site shares a lot of yearly reviews for top products, make sure those reviews, and the links associated with them, are updated yearly. This gives your content more long-term value and is less likely to become irrelevant.

Use Trending Topics

You can incorporate trending topics while still keeping your content evergreen. One of the easiest ways to get traffic to your site is by using trending or newsworthy topics from fast-moving media. This won’t necessarily make the link value evergreen, but it can help you gain traffic quickly through links.

This is a great reason to make a plan ahead of time of what you will be posting so that you can stay on top of trends. On the other hand, depending on what type of site you run, you will want to be ready to post breaking news or topics when necessary.

Write Testimonials

Another easy way to get your website name linked on other websites is to offer them a testimonial or review about their product, service, or brand. When you do this, you want to choose the top brands in your industry. This ensures that if they choose a review from you, that it will reach several people.

You’d be surprised at how eager brands and companies are to put testimonials on their sites. When they do this, they often include backlinks in relation to who left the review or testimonial. If you decide to do this, make sure you’re reaching out to a brand or company that you believe in and trust. You may want to be aware of any issues they’ve had in the past and how they handled them.

Host An Event

You can easily build high-quality backlinks by using your connections to your advantage. Whether you have several connections or not at all, hosting an event is a great way to make more. You may be wondering how an in-person event can help with your backlinks.

When you’re the one that’s hosting the event or meet-up, you will gain links from sites that list to the event or talk about it. This gives you exposure to your brand and gives you the ability to make plenty of new contacts in your industry.

Feature Other Brands

feature other brandsIn relation to making contacts, you can feature other brands. This is easily one of the best ways to get backlinks. You need to have a high-quality site that wants backlinks on your website or vice versa. This can help build a business relationship and you can both have backlinks for each other.

Chances are, this brand will help you get exposed to their social media following as well. You want to make sure you’re not featuring competitors, but again, companies you trust and believe in. There are ways that you can use your competition to your advantage when it comes to back-linking, but we’ll talk more about that later.

Reclaim Image Links

Often times, websites will have images that have a link relating to the source of the image. Occasionally, these links are broken or may not lead you to the proper site. This is a great opportunity for you to be aware of websites that are using your graphics or images without a proper backlink.

That being said, make sure the images and content on your website are backlinked as well. It is absolutely crucial that artists and creators get the credit that they deserve and it also helps build professional connections, often in other industries.

Use Competition To Your Advantage

So, you may be wondering how you can use competition to your advantage when it comes to finding high-quality backlinks. There are actually several things you can do in relation to your competitors. For starters, you can reach out to websites where your competitors have had a guest post.

If those websites are willing to backlink to your competitors, chances are they’re willing to work with you as well. This also shows that that website is high quality and high authority, making it perfect to guest post on for yourself!

You can also reach out to websites that link to your competitors. There are certain tools online that you can use to show you which sites have backlinks to your competitors. Once you find these sites, you can reach out to them to see if they’re willing to backlink to your site as well.

You can easily send a request to the publisher or author to place a specific link to your website, just like how they did with your competitor. Make sure you give them a good reason to use your business and your website.

Lastly, know who your competitors are. Having a website or business and not being aware of your competition is a dangerous move. Knowing who your competition is will help you stay ahead of the game and can even teach you something new about backlinking, content creation, marketing strategies, and more.

Link Placement

You’ve read a ton about high-quality and high authority content so far. Creating content that is of high quality and properly linking to it is a great way to get backlinks. You can also make it easy for other websites and publishers to link back to your website by doing this. Some websites even have an HTML code ready for publishers to copy and easily paste on their website.

Avoid Spam

If there’s one thing that decreases the quality of a link, it’s spam. Spam will also devalue your website and rank you lower on search engines. Search engines focus a lot on editorial links. With that being said, if links don’t need a certain standard or appear as spam, they will generate negative SEO results from search engines.

Give Interviews

One way to get high-quality backlinks that often gets overlooked is giving interviews. When someone publishes a blog about a specific topic or person, they often link to a relevant source. If this is you, you can give an interview or even make a round-up post in response to the one that backlinks to you on their site. This is a great way to not only get high-quality backlinks but build trustworthy business relationships.

Use External And Internal Links

Using both external and internal links is absolutely crucial. Believe it or not, external links are more influential than internal links. But, internal links keep readers on your website. When it comes to having high-quality backlinks, these will come from other sites, which will require external links.

Search engines also consider external links more valuable. Using external links is easily the quickest way to increase your ranking and gain more traffic. It is also important to note that if a page has a backlink to spam, it can actually devalue all of the other links on that page. This is why it’s absolutely crucial to make sure your links are to authoritative sites.

Guest Blog

We mentioned a bit before about how important guest blogging can be. It’s easily one of the best ways to grow your audience online. When you’re guest blogging, you’re able to reach out to an established audience that is interested in your industry. Guest blogging has been around for so long and has proven itself worthy of use.

Uniquely enough, Google is actually accepting guest contributors on their blog. This is proof that it is a great tactic to use when getting high-quality backlinks. Make sure that when you guest post for someone or someone guest blogs for you that the quality of the content is the best it can be. When you’re guest blogging for someone else, you want to put your best foot forward and show the audience why they should head over to your website and what you have to offer.

Replicate Other Backlinks

When it comes to SEO, Google is your best friend and also your boss. You will want to work hard so that your boss, Google, ranks you high. On the other hand, you’ll be spending a lot of time on Google to make sure you’re not only highly ranked, but that the search engine is continuously crawling all of your webpages.

With all this being said, you can easily use Google to get a list of your competitor’s backlinks and do your best to replicate them. When you do this, you want to make sure you’re using their best backlinks, not just any of them. This is one of the more unique and clever ways to find new link building opportunities. If done correctly, this can improve SEO for your website.

You can start by finding out who your main competitors are. If you don’t already know who they are, simply type in one of your main keywords and see which websites are in the first five positions of the search results. If they are ranking above you, this means they are competition. It also means that they have higher quality backlinks. Study what backlinks they use and replicate them to the best of your ability, but do not outright copy them.

Bottom Line

Whether you’re creating your first website or improving the one you already have, having high-quality backlinks is crucial to your business’s success. You have read just about everything there is to know relating to the topic.

We hope that now you understand why you should use backlinks and their importance, and you’re able to apply the simple link building tactics listed above. You’ve also read about how you can be aware of what makes a backlink high-quality and you know how to get backlinks and where to easily find them.
